Domestic Bliss

When I spend time photographing a family, I leave all of my expectations about the types of images I’m going to capture at the door. Luckily domestic life naturally lends itself to some pretty adorable moments, so there isn’t much I need to plan for. I feel most comfortable as a photographer when my subjects get to just be themselves. So when photographing kids I literally get down on the ground and start playing with them first and foremost. It’s important to enter into their world a little, before pulling out a huge camera and snapping away. Sometimes it takes only a few seconds to develop a rapport with a child, other times I have to let several minutes go by before taking a single photograph. Patience is key when photographing children.
I’ve been taking photos of the 4 children featured below for about 3 years now. And documenting their growth and creativity has been magical. These kids let me into their world, and it’s just plain fun. Playing dress up, making goofy faces, laughing together, throwing tantrums, surviving boo boos, trading silly bands, and taking lots of photos. I’ve always called these sets of photographs “Domestic Bliss”.
Most of these images were taken with my Nikon D700, though a few of the black and white images are 120 film taken with my Contax 645.
