15 Aug Little Adam – Project Love Trisomy 21
Inspiration
This year I took on a new journey of giving back to the community in my area by starting an awareness project to help existing and new families with children that have an extra chromosome. Project Love Trisomy 21 was born and through this project, I reach out to several children with Down Syndrome by giving them a fun (and hopefully memorable) portrait session with their families. Locally in my country, the general outlook on Down Syndrome is a typical sad and daunting story. So I hope to help spread the happiness and hope which we can actually find in these families. Hopefully through these true stories of positive hopes and happiness, the children and adults with Down Syndrome in my country will be treated much better, with much more respect and understanding.
Little Adam was the very first child I had the honor to photograph and share his story to the world. 🙂
Favorite Element
Definitely the love and happiness we could feel and see between Adam and his parents. They were so expressive with each other, loving and caring for Adam without any boundaries. The first time we met, Little Adam (18 months young then) gave me one of his cheekiest smile ever! His parents shared with us that he’s such a clever little boy, capable of out-witting his trainers at Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation Centre. On several occasions when he didn’t feel like doing the activities with them, he’d play pretend sick or sleeping! Such an amazing cheeky boy!
He was full of smiles throughout the session and even let me cuddle with him without a fuss!
Biggest Challenge
It was kind of tricky to achieve eye-contact with Adam as he has some issue with his eyes coordination which is still being rectified as he grows. So instead of achieving that connection with my camera, I focused on his connection and interaction with his parents instead. It’s like watching a movie unfold as I documented their memories together.
Final Thoughts
I am starting to learn a lot more about children with Down Syndrome through this project. The stories being shared with me have given me new perspectives of these wonderful children. It isn’t hard to fall in-love with them and I pray that more photographers in my area will join force with me to keep this project going and make it grow. 🙂 Feel free to visit our Facebook Page and send us some love. Every little love counts!
